PERKASIE, Pa. (July 13, 2015) The Historic Perkasie Park Association will open its privately owned Victorian camp meeting grounds to the public again this August, as the Association celebrates its 133rd anniversary with its third annual Founders Day.
The free event is from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. In past years, the event was limited to local historical society members, and friends and family of Park members. But local residents may attend. However, parking is limited, so local visitors are asked to contact the Park at the addresses and phone numbers below.
Perkasie Park features 60 Victorian-era cottages, a historic outdoor auditorium, and other buildings located on 21 acres of open space within Perkasie Borough. It is a summertime community for association members who travel from as near as South Perkasie and as far as Texas, Florida and Arizona to spend time at Perkasie Park.
“Most people who visit the Park for services and events, or to see friends and family, say it is like stepping back in time,” said Scott Bomboy, president of the Association, which is a 501c7 organization. “The Park has been preserved solely through private funds and it has an unusual amount of intact cottages and an auditorium that dates back in 1886.”
This year, two period musical groups will entertain visitors as they walk through the Park and experience a concert in its historic auditorium. “The outdoor auditorium was built for preachers to speak to at least 1,000 people. But it also hosted live music in the Victorian era and concerts for several decades after that,” said Bomboy.
A quartet from the Valley Forge chapter of the Sweet Adelines will perform at 2:30 p.m. and 3:20 p.m. in the Park, and at 4 p.m. the Upper Bucks Senior Center Orchestra will take the stage with renditions of swing and Big Band-era music.
Visitors can also take part in a self-guided tour of the Park. In the past two years, between 10 and 15 cottage owners have opened their cottages to well-behaved members of the public. There also will be a video presentation of rare pictures and information about the Park in its dining hall before the 4 p.m. concert.
Perkasie Park received a determination of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, and it has been designated as a Historic Structure by Perkasie Borough. Its auditorium is on the Bucks County Heritage Conservancy list. The Park has held summertime religious services in the auditorium since 1882 and it has hosted services for nearly every religious group in the local Perkasie/Pennridge region.
