Perkasie Park To Hold Founders Day Celebration On August 6, 2016
PERKASIE, Pa. (July 17, 2016) The Historic Perkasie Park Association will open its privately owned Victorian camp meeting grounds to the public again this August, as the Association celebrates its 134th anniversary with its fourth annual Founders Day.
The free event is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine, on August 6, 2016. Local residents may attend, but parking is limited, so visitors are asked to park on Ninth Street if able to do so.
Visitors can take part in a self-guided tour of the Park during the event. In the past three years, between 10 and 15 cottage owners have opened their cottages to the public. There also will be a presentation of rare pictures and information about the Park at its dining hall during the tours.
This year, the Pennsylvania Bureau for Historic Preservation approved Perkasie Park for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District. The state said the Park is significant as a property associated with the American camp meeting movement of the late 19th and early 20th Century, and for its design and architecture.
The Park features 60 Victorian-era cottages, a historic outdoor auditorium, and other buildings located on 21 acres of open space within Perkasie Borough. It is a summertime community for association members who travel from as near as South Perkasie and as far as Texas, Florida and Arizona to spend time there.
“Most people who visit the Park for services and events, or to see friends and family, say it is like stepping back in time,” said Scott Bomboy, president of the Park’s activities association. “The Park has been preserved solely through private funds and it has an unusual amount of intact cottages and an outdoor auditorium that dates back in 1886.”
This year, Bucks County Folk Song society members The Double Ds will perform music from the Great American Song Book in the Park’s historic auditorium during the Park’s self-guided tours and at an after-tour reception at 4 p.m. (Facebook users can find out more about the duo on their Facebook page, DoubleDsmusic.)
Perkasie Park also has been designated as a Historic Structure by Perkasie Borough. Its auditorium is on the Bucks County Heritage Conservancy list. The Park has held summertime religious services in the auditorium since 1882 and it has hosted services for nearly every religious group in the local Perkasie/Pennridge region.
