Perkasie Park To Hold Founders Day Celebration On August 5, 2017
Victorian camp meeting location marks 135th year of continuous operations
PERKASIE, Pa. (July 19, 2017) The Historic Perkasie Park Association will open its privately owned Victorian camp meeting grounds to the public again this August, as the Association celebrates its 135th anniversary and its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places with its fifth annual Founders Day.
The free event is from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine, on August 5, 2017. Local residents may attend, but parking is very limited, so visitors are asked to park on Ninth Street if able to do so.
Visitors can take part in a self-guided tour of the Park during the event from 12 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. A special presentation marking the Park’s National Register recognition will be at 4 p.m., followed by musical entertainment. Refreshments also will be available for purchase at the Park’s historic refreshment stand.
Perkasie Park was recently honored on the floor of the United States House of Representatives by Representative Brian Fitzpatrick. “I am proud to represent a district that understands and honors its deep-rooted history and join with the people of Perkasie in celebrating this momentous anniversary and accomplishment,” Fitzpatrick said in his resolution read into the Congressional Record.
In the past four years, about a dozen cottage owners have opened their cottages to the public. There also will be a presentation of rare pictures and information about the Park at its dining hall during the tours.
The Park features 60 Victorian-era cottages, a historic outdoor auditorium, and other buildings located on 21 acres of open space within Perkasie Borough. It is a summertime community for association members who travel from as near as South Perkasie and as far as Texas, Florida and Arizona to spend time there.
"Perkasie Park played a historically significant role in the early growth of the Borough of Perkasie,” said Frank Pezzanite, the president of the Perkasie Park Association. “The Park established Perkasie as a destination point for thousands of Camp Meeting participants. The Park's inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places underscores the Park's historic value to the Borough of Perkasie and future generations."
This year, Bucks County Folk Song society members Unsafe At Any Speed will play acoustic folk songs after the Historic Register presentation.
Perkasie Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 2016 as a Historic District; it also has been designated as a Historic Structure by Perkasie Borough. Its auditorium is on the Bucks County Heritage Conservancy list. The Park has held summertime religious services in the auditorium since 1882 and it has hosted services for nearly every religious group in the local Perkasie/Pennridge region.
